The Teen Taley Resort was started in 2005, with one building having three rooms and three staff members. The resort at the initial phase was conceived as a home stay and later as a village resort. The basic idea behind the establishment was as a getaway from the hectic pace of city life. The founders decided for this very reason to build a resort in Rumtek as it had a perfect location.It was conceptualized from the start as an environment friendly resort.  Agriculture, animal husbandry and floriculture were given major emphasis right from the early days. The resort in the initial days also supplied milk to the diary as well as local consumers. One of the major resources of the resort has been its gardens; there was meticulous work and supervision of this. The resort in its initial days was not self- sustaining, it was turned slowly into a profitable venture through training of its staff and an understanding of the vision with which it started.The resort became successful only in the third year of its establishment, tourists slowly came to realize the charm of the village and it became popular through word of mouth. This popularity was primarily based on the service provided and the beauty, peace of a village setting. Interestingly one of the major causes for success is the nature of relation between the employer and the employee. Labor in this resort is given dignity, the owner, managers do not hesitate to work in the field or help out in the kitchen.  This leads to a healthy relation between the staff and the management. This has been one of the highlights of the practices of the resort.

 The resort drew inspiration from many sources one of them being Mt. Nursing, Ravangla. The technicalities of the tourism industry as well as that of a village resort were drawn from here. There have also been many others who believed in and nurtured this resort. The North East Development Fund provided the means for the resort to sustain itself economically in the initial phase.There has also been a continuous infrastructural expansion of the resort, two double cottages, a suite block, badminton court, an all- purpose hall, a sarva dharma temple were all gradually constructed in the resort. A newly built bamboo restaurant is the pride of the place. 

Culturally, the resort has played a very important role. The uniforms of the staff from the very beginning represented the three major ethnic communities of Sikkim. The resort also hosted many cultural activities, it had dance troupes comprising of the villagers for performance during the tourist season.Teen Taley Resort with only seven years of experience has made itself a name in the tourism industry. Teen Taley Resort is not only a resort but also an institution; it caters to the local economy, environment, culture of Sikkim. In all of this it stands out because it is not a business venture, it is primarily a social enterprise.
